FreeCAD Portable is software for 3D modeling and designing engineering parts and products.
FreeCAD Portable Analysis
There are many tools for 3D CAD modeling ( SolidWorks, Solid Edge, etc), but practically all of them are paid. It is true that these tools are very complete and perform perfectly, which is why they are used by thousands of design and engineering companies.
Thanks to FreeCAD it is possible to obtain functionalities similar to commercial programs, for free, since it is an open-source program that began being developed in 2002. Even so, this program is still in its development phase and does not have all the functionalities of commercial CAD software. This does not mean that high-quality projects cannot be developed with this software. The development of this tool progresses faster every day, thanks to the great community that has been formed over the years and that has been contributing to the project code.
The FreeCAD Portable interface is the typical one used by this type of program: 3D view of the designed object, hierarchy and history of created objects, object property editor, a console where warning or error messages are displayed, and python console, where the python commands that the software executes are shown, and where we can also introduce our own python commands to manipulate the document objects, for this we must study the python API that the software provides.
Although the FreeCAD Portable is focused on CAD design, you can also make 2D designs or even design 3D figures of organic objects (animals, persons, etc). All this can be done thanks to the fact that the program has different “ Work Zones ”. These zones are focused on carrying out a particular job, for this, the program will load the necessary tools to carry out that job. For example, if we want to create meshes, we will use the specific “ work zone ” for this task, and the program will load the tools we need to perform it. However, if we are going to design an object in 2D, the program will load other types of tools.
FreeCAD Portable has extensive documentation that we can find in the software menu and on the program’s official website. Having good documentation for this type of program is important as it speeds up the learning process. Although if we know how to use some other CAD software, it will be very easy for us to get used to the interface of this program.
Without a doubt, this is a great program to use as an alternative to commercial programs. It will be very useful for students who want to get started in the CAD world since this tool offers them a work environment very similar to paid CAD programs, so they will be able to become familiar with this type of environment without having to buy any commercial software.
FreeCAD Portable has the advantage that it can be used on the main operating systems: Windows, Mac, and Linux, since it is compatible with those systems and includes a unique installer for each of them.
Is FreeCAD free?
Yes, this program is free, so you can use it without any type of limitation, and at no additional cost. Furthermore, this software is open source, which means that you will be able to download the source code of the program, and if you have enough knowledge, you will be able to see how the software works internally and modify its functionality.
